Artist Statement
Rex Autry paints from instinct. His practice draws on the physical act of mark-making — the accumulated decisions, revisions, and accidental arrivals that transform raw material into something with its own interior logic. Working primarily in oil and acrylic on canvas and linen, Autry explores how color, scale, and gesture interact to create works that feel both immediate and enduring.
The paintings resist easy narrative. They begin somewhere between intention and accident — a color relationship that insists on itself, a surface that becomes a record of time spent. Influences as distinct as Rothko’s color theology, Frankenthaler’s soaked-field quietness, and the flat visual heat of Houston summers all find their way in without being named.
Based in Houston, Texas, his work has been exhibited across the Gulf Coast region and collected privately throughout the United States. He is drawn to the moment a painting stops being a painting and becomes a fact.
